Dragon Boat Festival: Introduction and Official Holiday Notice

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. With a history of thousands of years, it was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2009. The festival originates from the commemoration of the patriotic ancient poet Qu Yuan.
People keep various traditional customs to mark the festival, including eating zongzi (glutinous rice dumplings), holding dragon boat races, hanging wormwood and calamus, and wearing colorful silk threads. These folk traditions carry Chinese people’s wishes for health, peace and good fortune, and embody unique traditional Chinese culture.
2026 Official Dragon Boat Festival Holiday Notice
According to the official holiday arrangement released by the General Office of the State Council, the 2026 Dragon Boat Festival public holiday will last for three days, from June 22 to June 24. No make-up work or classes are scheduled during the holiday.
Relevant departments remind the public to arrange travel and daily plans in advance. Citizens are advised to travel off-peak to avoid traffic congestion, pay attention to food and travel safety, and celebrate the festival in a civilized and healthy way.
